CLOSED MARKET LEAVES GROUPS HOLDING BAG; GROCERY SCRIP UNREDEEMABLE.

Byline: Enrique Rivero Daily News Staff Writer

Customers and suppliers of Danish American Farms in North Hills say they're stuck with thousands of dollars of useless scrip and unpaid bills as a result of the landmark grocery store's closure on Monday.

Holders of the scrip - coupons that are like gift certificates and can be used as cash at the store - said Tuesday that they were stunned stun

Among those with worthless scrip are nonprofit organizations Nonprofit Organization

The group then sells them at full price and uses the proceeds for programs at the synagogue synagogue (sĭn`əgŏg) [Gr.,=assembly], in Judaism, a place of assembly for worship, education, and communal affairs. The origins of the institution are unclear. One tradition dates it to the Babylonian exile of the 6th cent. B.C. .

``I'm going to be stuck with over $500 (in scrip) and they (Danish American Farms officials) don't want to do anything about it,'' said Mary Jacobs, chairwoman of the temple's scrip program.

Wilbur Clunen, plant manager of Sun Valley Food Corp. in Sun Valley, said Danish American Farms closed owing the company thousands of dollars for poultry products.

He fears his company will have to absorb most, if not all, the loss if Danish American files for bankruptcy.

``It's kind of like a trial - the victims have no rights and the criminals have all the rights,'' Clunen said. ``We can't chase them.''

On Monday morning, employees reporting to work were greeted by locked doors and a sign saying the landmark grocery store had gone out of business.

Trudy Feldman said she had been purchasing the coupons from Danish American for about 10 years for Temple Ramat Zion in Northridge. She said Tuesday that she's left with about $1,740 in scrip and expects to get more coupons back from individuals who had purchased them from her.

Profits from sale of the scrip went to educational and other programs at the synagogue, she said. ``This is just so rotten rot·ten
