CLOSE THE CHAPTER OR WE CLOSE THE BOOK; NOV 24 Ulster leaders are given 6-month deadline to form new government.

NORTHERN Ireland's warring politicians were yesterday given a six month deadline to form their own government.

And Tony Blair Noun 1. Tony Blair - British statesman who became prime minister in 1997 (born in 1953)
Anthony Charles Lynton Blair, Blair
and Irish Premier Bertie Ahern threatened to "close the book" on the Stormont Assembly if there is no agreement.

They confirmed the assembly - suspended in 2002 amid allegations of a Sinn Fein Sinn Fein

If that fails they will get one final chance to appoint a First Minister and Deputy when the Assembly is recalled again in September.

But if they still cannot agree by the November 24 deadline, Stormont will be disbanded, the 108 members stripped of their salaries - with no elections to replace them.

And the two leaders would then begin to set up "enhanced" Anglo- Irish partnerships to impose rule from Dublin and London.

Mr Blair said: "At the conclusion of this period we either resolve to go forward on the basis of mature democracy or we call time on this and seek another way to go. At that point we close the chapter - or we close the book."

Mr Ahern said: "The challenge now is to finish the job."

Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams said: "I appeal to Unionism to seize this opportunity. But on his 80th birthday Unionist leader Ian Paisley demanded the assembly be re-established even without an executive.

And he attacked the Irish government's role, saying: "A foreign government has more say over Northern Ireland than the people of Northern Ireland."

AGENDA FOR A POWER DEAL

ASSEMBLY recalled on May 15: given six weeks to form an executive.

IF this fails, a further 12 weeks are allowed after the summer recess to form an executive.

IF not done by November 24, assembly members' salaries will be stopped.

BRITISH and Irish Governments would then work on partnership arrangements to implement the Good Friday Agreement.
