Los Angeles International Airport (IATA: LAX, ICAO: KLAX, FAA LID: LAX
has suffered far more rust and decay than first thought and will likely spend at least the rest of the year under repair.

The damage inside the huge arches that loop above the saucer-like building came to light earlier this year when a half-ton slab of plaster broke free. Engineers initially thought the problems were limited to the building's upper arches, but have since found evidence of widespread decay extending into the lower arches as well.

Work crews have already wreathed the landmark building in scaffolding and will soon drape drape

"We only get one shot at this," said Glenn Ito, a senior civil engineer at the airport who is overseeing the work. "We want to make sure we do it right. This is the symbol of LAX."

The first sign of trouble came in late February, when a 1,000-pound chunk of stucco stucco (stŭk`ō), in architecture, a term loosely applied to various kinds of plasterwork, both exterior and interior. It now commonly refers to a plaster or cement used for the external coating of buildings, most frequently employed in  tumbled from one of the upper arches and crashed into the building's main platform. The crumbling plaster, though, prompted airport engineers to take a closer look at the tops of the arches. What they found was rust and decay spreading through the web of metal that attaches the arches' stucco skin to their steel cores.
