CLIPS CAN'T HOLD ON MAGGETTE FAILS TO GET SHOT OFF AS HEAT WINS IN ODOM'S RETURN MIAMI 87, CLIPPERS 85.

Byline: Joe Stevens Staff Writer

The Clippers played an ugly game and concluded it fittingly with an ugly finish.

After two overtime games in a row, the Clippers missed a chance for a third by failing to get off a shot to tie at the buzzer and lost to the Miami Heat The Miami Heat (known as the HEAT [in all capital letters] on official team publications) are a professional basketball team based in Miami, Florida, United States. The last-second scenario was full of drama. The execution was full of holes.

In Lamar Odom's debut against his former team, he slipped and had an ugly turnover, giving the Clippers possession with 8.9 seconds left and no timeouts.

It was just a hiccup hiccup or hiccough, involuntary spasmodic contraction of the diaphragm followed by a sharp intake of air, which is abruptly stopped by a sudden, involuntary closing of the glottis (opening between the vocal cords); the consequent blocking of air  in a grand return, in which Odom had 11 points and 15 rebounds.

After Odom's stumble, the Clippers' Corey Maggette Corey Antoine Maggette (born November 12 1979, in Melrose Park, Illinois) is an American professional basketball player, positioned at small forward for the NBA's Los Angeles Clippers.  tried to take the game into his own hands. After inbounding the ball, he got it back with Odom guarding him. But he held it too long, failing to get off a shot, and the Heat snapped a losing streak A Losing Streak is the third episode of series 2 of the BBC sit-com, Only Fools and Horses. ``I shouldn't have taken the ball out,'' Maggette said. ``I would have had more time to run up if I didn't. By the time I ran down, the clock was already halfway gone. I need to recognize that.''

``We need to know the clock,'' he said.

, Odom went from being the goat to hero in 8.9 seconds. He briefly complained to officials about a possible foul call when he slipped and turned over the ball, but then he re-adjusted to shut down Maggette.

``With seven seconds left in the game, I knew they had no timeouts left, so instead of huffing and puffing, I put all my effort into shutting Maggette down,'' Odom said.

Throughout the night, Odom was booed almost every time he touched the ball. Before leaving for Miami, he called the Clippers organization ``basketball hell,'' and he made it clear he no longer wanted to play here when he told the Miami Herald: ``I just want to get as far away from the Clippers as possible.''

On Friday, Clippers fans let him have it. But he and his team came out on top.

``It's great he got to be the defender at the end,'' Miami coach Stan Van Gundy Stan "The Hedgehog" Van Gundy (born September 21, 1959 in Indio, California) is the current head coach of the NBA's Orlando Magic, and is the brother of former Houston Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy.
