CLIPPERS WIN AMID CHANGE DUNLEAVY ABSENT, JARIC MAY LEAVE AND MAGGETTE THROUGH CLIPPERS 94, UTAH 85.

Byline: Joe Stevens Staff Writer

The Clippers took another step toward finishing with a better record than the Lakers in the battle for some sort of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  bragging rights with a 94-85 victory over the Utah Jazz in front of 18,697 at Staples Center This articlearticle or section has multiple issues:

.

But even as the Clippers took a one-game lead over the Lakers in the standings, three other things happened Tuesday that were more significant:

1. Coach Mike Dunleavy Mike Dunleavy is the name of two notable persons in basketball, father and son:
  • Mike Dunleavy, Sr. is a former NBA player and is the current coach of the Los Angeles Clippers.
  • Mike Dunleavy, Jr.
was not with the team for the first time in his two-year tenure with the Clippers as he went to Brooklyn, N.Y., to be with his ailing father. Assistant Jim Eyen, Dunleavy's right-hand man for 15 years, took the helm.

2. Corey Maggette Corey Antoine Maggette (born November 12 1979, in Melrose Park, Illinois) is an American professional basketball player, positioned at small forward for the NBA's Los Angeles Clippers.  was out, and the team announced he will miss the final four games of the season because of a torn ligament in his left wrist. Maggette had been battling the injury for a few weeks, and he concluded his season with a career-high 22.2-point average.

3. Marko Jaric discussed his pending free agency this offseason, saying he has a point guard's mentality and prefers playing that position as opposed to shooting guard The Shooting guard (SG), also known as the two or off guard,[1] is one of five traditional positions on a basketball team. Players of the position are often shorter, leaner, and quicker than forwards. .

``I think as a point guard,'' Jaric said. ``With this team in front of me, I never think about scoring points. I feel best when this team is winning and I'm over there running the team.''

Jaric and Bobby Simmons Bobby Simmons (born June 2 1980 in Chicago, Illinois) is an American professional basketball player currently with the Milwaukee Bucks of the National Basketball Association. College career
Simmons played three years of college basketball for DePaul University.
will be unrestricted free agents after the season, and both could be difficult to re-sign.

Simmons is a strong candidate for the league's Most Improved Player In some sports, a Most Improved Player award is given to players who have improved the most over the year.
  • NBA Most Improved Player Award
  • PWI Most Improved Wrestler of the Year
award, and Jaric is not considered the team's ``point guard of the future.'' That tag goes to 19-year-old rookie Shaun Livingston.

``It's hard for me to think about something else, especially now with the season still on,'' Jaric said. ``But I also don't like to see that other teams might appreciate me more than a team that I spent three years with and they know me very well. That's kind of a bad sensation, you understand, when you see that other people like you more than your own team.''

Jaric had 20 points and seven assists in the Clippers' victory. Elton Brand had team highs with 25 points and 10 rebounds. The Clippers led 27-15 at the end of the first quarter and led the rest of the way, by as many as 23 points in the third quarter.
