CLIPPERS UPDATE: MCINNIS MAKING A POINT.

Byline: Sean Kearns Staff Writer

PALM DESERT - The list of Clippers point guards over the past two seasons is not illustrious: Darrick Martin Darrick David Martin (born March 6, 1971 in Denver, Colorado, United States) is an American professional basketball player, currently with the NBA's Toronto Raptors. Martin has became known as a solid veteran who provided quality minutes as a reserve, maintaining a career free , Sherman Douglas Sherman Douglas (born September 15 1966, in Washington, D.C., U.S.A.) is an American former professional basketball player from Syracuse University who played for the Miami Heat, Boston Celtics, Milwaukee Bucks, New Jersey Nets and the Los Angeles Clippers. from 1989 to 1992. , Troy Hudson Troy Hudson (born March 13 1976 in Carbondale, Illinois) is an American professional basketball player, currently a reserve point guard for the Golden State Warriors in the NBA. ``I feel like we can change all that about the Clippers not really having a good point guard,'' McInnis said. ``I think we can turn that around whether (Dooling is) the starter or I'm the starter. It doesn't really matter. When we are on the court I don't think there is any weakness.''

Near the end of training camp at College of the Desert, McInnis is the favorite for the starting job while Dooling keeps the title of point guard of the future.

``Jeff has done extremely well I think from the standpoint of trying to keep guys organized and running the team and things like that,'' Clippers coach Alvin Gentry said. ``Keyon is coming along and we always have the luxury of playing Lamar.''

``I love (McInnis') defensive intensity,'' Gentry said.

But to get to this point McInnis has battled all the way.

Last season he was named the CBA's Most Valuable Player, even after he signed with the Clippers in February.

He has been criticized at times for his attitude and his shooting. Ready to turn 26 on Oct. 22, McInnis said he's matured into a different person. Gentry said he is pleased with his ability to lead the team.

This summer McInnis worked out with Rod Strickland of the Washington Wizards and a shooting coach. He also spent time working on his shooting with Clippers assistant Rex Kalamian.

``I expect to start,'' said McInnis, who played well on the Clippers' summer-league team. ``Not because I've been here but because I've worked on my game a lot and people question weather I can hit the open shot and I'm anxious to get it going so I can show them.''

Gentry said Dooling is progressing but that he will need time to develop, much like fellow rookies Darius Miles and Quentin Richardson.

The most intriguing possibility at point guard is the 6-foot-10, multidimensional Odom, who played the position at times last season. Gentry hasn't elaborated too much on how much he will use Odom at the point.
