CLIPPERS UPDATE: DUNLEAVY LIKES CLIPPERS' LOOK.

Byline: Sean Kearns Staff Writer

Portland Trail Blazers The Portland Trail Blazers are a professional basketball team based in Portland, Oregon. They play in the National Basketball Association (NBA). The franchise, based in Portland throughout its existence, entered the league in 1970 and has won the NBA Championship once, in 1977.  coach Mike Dunleavy Mike Dunleavy is the name of two notable persons in basketball, father and son:
  • Mike Dunleavy, Sr. is a former NBA player and is the current coach of the Los Angeles Clippers.
  • Mike Dunleavy, Jr.
got his second look at the Clippers on Tuesday night.

While he says the Clippers have talent, Dunleavy is waiting to see if the franchise can keep its good players before he'll say it has turned any corners.

``They've got a nice team,'' said Dunleavy, whose Trail Blazers lost to the Clippers 90-83, at Staples Center This articlearticle or section has multiple issues:

to figure out, can you keep the players? They had very good players in Derek Anderson
For the American football player, see Derek Anderson (football player).

Derek Lamont Anderson (born July 18, 1974 in Louisville, Kentucky) is an American professional basketball player for the Charlotte Bobcats.
and Maurice Taylor Maurice De Shawn Taylor (born October 30, 1976 in Detroit, Michigan) is an American professional basketball player at the power forward position. He was most recently with the NBA's Sacramento Kings, released on January 23, 2007.  that virtually got away last year for free. That's not what you would have in your usual plan. You are trying to get the most for your assets if you can't retain them you want to get something more for them.''

Taylor, the Clippers' leading scorer last season, and Anderson, the Clippers' second leading scorer, both departed to take the $2.25 million exception, leaving the Clippers with nothing in return.

Dunleavy said the Clippers won't make a push to be a good team until the franchise can retain it's players.

``You have to build,'' Dunleavey said. ``If you build, you bring in a few pieces this year and then you bring in a few pieces next year and keep all these pieces . . . you keep getting better. I don't see how a team can get better without retaining.''

Corey Maggette Corey Antoine Maggette (born November 12 1979, in Melrose Park, Illinois) is an American professional basketball player, positioned at small forward for the NBA's Los Angeles Clippers.  scored 20 points and Earl Boykins scored nine of his 11 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Clippers.

The Clippers erased a 10-point deficit in the final 10 minutes for their third win in four games and first exhibition victory over Portland in 13 attempts.

Darius Miles, the Clippers No. 1 draft pick, added 15 points and rookie Zendon Hamilton had 15 rebounds and eight points.

The Clippers have said they will have better stability with the new collective-bargaining agreement that keeps players with the teams that drafted them for up to five seasons.

Clippers coach Alvin Gentry said he focuses more on developing the current players.

``I don't ever worry about that because I think my job is to develop the players as best we possibly can as a coaching staff,'' Gentry said. ``When the time comes Adv. 1. when the time comes - at the appropriate time; "we'll get to this question in due course"
in due course, in due season, in due time, in good time
, there will have to be a decision made as to are you going to keep players or are you not. But right now our goal is to make Darius Miles and Quentin Richardson and all our young guys as good a players as we possibly can.

``Until that particular thing is done away with, obviously it's going to be a cloud that is going to hang over.''
