CLIPPERS SURVIVE LAKERS COMEBACKS : CLIPPERS 97 LAKERS 95.

Byline: Gary Washburn Daily News Staff Writer

Are the Clippers like a box of chocolates?

Ask the Lakers.

Ahead by 24 points, the Clippers collapsed. Ahead by eight with 2:31 left, they collapsed again. But when it counted, a cold Malik Sealy Malik Sealy (February 1, 1970 – May 20, 2000) was an American professional basketball player from 1992 until his death in an automobile accident. Sealy played eight seasons in the NBA for the Indiana Pacers, the Los Angeles Clippers, the Detroit Pistons, and the Minnesota  punctuated a huge Clippers victory with a rebound dunk as the Clippers escaped 97-95 in front of a sellout crowd of 17,505 at the Forum.

Sealy's dunk came with 7.3 seconds left after Darrick Martin's layup bounced off the rim.

The Lakers called timeout with 5.5 seconds left but Nick Van Exel's leaning 19-footer was partially blocked and the Clippers avoided a devastating dev·as·tate

The Lakers used 3-pointers, nine in the second half, to storm back from a 24-point deficit and tie the game at 95 with an Elden Campbell Elden Jerome Campbell (born July 23, 1968 in Los Angeles, California) is an American former professional basketball player who played center in the National Basketball Association (NBA).

The Clippers (27-35) worked the clock down, Martin streaked for the layup and Sealy jumped over Campbell for the putback.

For the game the Lakers (42-21) shot just 38 percent but Kobe Bryant's 12 second-half points - three 3-pointers - was nearly good enough.

Down by 15 at the half, the Lakers thought it couldn't get worse. The Clippers began the third quarter half with a 13-4 run for a 67-43 lead, bringing back memories of the Anaheim game.

It wasn't until then the Lakers sensed danger. Bryant spurred a 20-6 run with two 3-pointers and the Lakers were within 73-63 by the fourth quarter.

The Lakers shot 32 percent in the first half as the Clippers built a 54-39 lead, which ignited a shower of boos from the shocked Lakers crowd. The 30-19 rebounding advantage didn't matter because the Lakers usually missed the putbacks.

Thanks to Vaught, who began the Phoenix game missing 7 of 8 shots, the Clippers were the aggressive, opportunistic club that beat the Lakers last month. He started Friday 7 for 9 and had 16 points at halftime.

The Lakers got into foul trouble in the second quarter and threw Travis Knight Travis Knight (born September 13 1974 in Salt Lake City, Utah) is an American former professional basketball player who was selected by the Chicago Bulls in the 1st round (29th overall) of the 1996 NBA Draft. , Corie Blount Corie Kasoun Blount (born January 4, 1969 in Monrovia, California) is an American former professional basketball player.

Fitch used Pooh Richardson to replace Martin as the Clippers went on a 17-5 run midway through the second quarter. Lakers coach Del Harris countered with everyone but Larry Krystkowiak but nothing worked.
