Gentry, who was the head coach in Detroit for most of the last three seasons, had been in the running from the beginning. He said Monday in the San Antonio Express-News The San Antonio Express-News is the daily newspaper of San Antonio, Texas. It is ranked as the third-largest daily newspaper in the state of Texas in terms of circulation, and is one of the leading news sources of South Texas, with offices in Austin, Brownsville, Laredo, and  he wanted the job and liked the team's young players.

``This is the perfect time to get that job,'' Gentry said. ``They have a lot of young, talented players and they will be able to hold on to them for the next four years or so.''

Gentry was unavailable for comment Wednesday. The Clippers had no comment on the coaching vacancy.

The Clippers have been without a coach since Chris Ford was fired in February. Jim Todd took Ford's place on an interim basis for the rest of the season. Todd's name was removed from consideration for the head job once the season ended.

San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich hired Gentry as an assistant in June. This was after Atlanta announced that Gentry was going to be their top assistant. It turned out Gentry hadn't made his final decision.

Gentry, 45, was fired with 24 games remaining last season. The Pistons were 28-30 when he was fired and had lost seven of their last 10 games.

The Clippers also talked to former Lakers coach Del Harris about the job. Cincinnati coach Bob Huggins said he was offered the job but turned it down.

Mike Fratello was in contention early but withdrew his name. He then had renewed interest late but withdrew again.

Johnson tried to impress Baylor through coaching the Clippers' summer-league team but never became a top candidate.
