CLIPPERS NOTEBOOK : FITCH EATS INTELLIGENTLY, FEELS FIT, HEALTHY.

Byline: Gary Washburn Daily News Staff Writer

He's now Bill Fitch William Fitch (born May 19 1934 in Davenport, Iowa) is a former NBA coach who has been successful in making teams playoff contenders throughout his coaching career. Before entering the professional ranks he coached college ball at the University of Minnesota, Bowling Green State , health nut.

The Clippers coach is feeling fine after the first six regular-season games. The 64-year-old checks his blood pressure after every game and it has stayed at a healthy level.

``Actually, it was even lower after the overtime game (against the Knicks),'' Fitch said. ``I check it all the time and so far it hasn't given me any trouble.''

Since recovering from triple-bypass surgery in August, Fitch has completely changed his diet. Instead of fast food after games, Fitch eats salads and soups. He said he hasn't been tempted to cheat yet.

``When they tear your chest open and open up your legs to take out a vein to put in your chest, then you get the encouragement to stick to it,'' Fitch said. ``I don't want that happening again.''

Fitch said his heart ailment ailĀ·ment

can't be compared with the condition of former Dodgers manager Tom Lasorda, whose angioplasty led to his retirement.

``That's like comparing getting your tooth pulled and a root canal root canal

,'' Fitch said. ``I've had the root canal.''

Fitch said he will continue to receive examinations throughout the season. However, as long as he is healthy, doctors have told him he can coach.

One year too late: Pooh Richardson Jerome "Pooh" Richardson (born May 14 1966 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is an American former National Basketball Association (NBA) player.

The 6'1" point guard was taken by the Minnesota Timberwolves with the tenth overall pick of the 1989 NBA Draft out of UCLA.

``My first choice was Lorenzo Romar Lorenzo Romar (born November 13, 1958 in South Gate, California, United States) is the current head men's basketball coach at the University of Washington. Romar also played basketball for the University of Washington from 1978 to 1980. ,'' Richardson said. ``But that would be impossible now.''

Richardson said he has kept a close watch on the situation at UCLA and he is bothered by the timing of Jim Harrick's dismissal.

``I guess Chancellor Young and Peter Dalis felt they had to do what they did,'' Richardson said. ``But it's tough because guys are ready to sign. I'm concerned. I contribute to the scholarship fund. I just hope they can make the best out of this situation.''

Injury update: Clippers center Dwayne Schintzius didn't make the trip to Vancouver and will remain on the injured list with a sprained ankle.

Schintzius has yet to play this season and Fitch gave no indication when he might return.
