CLIPPERS NOTEBOOK: MAGGETTE TO HAVE KNEE SURGERY.

Byline: Joe Stevens Staff Writer

The Clippers' injury problems got worse Tuesday when they learned Corey Maggette Corey Antoine Maggette (born November 12 1979, in Melrose Park, Illinois) is an American professional basketball player, positioned at small forward for the NBA's Los Angeles Clippers.  needs arthroscopic surgery Arthroscopic Surgery Definition

 showed surgery was a must.

Maggette started in the Clippers' first 14 games and averaged 14.0 points and 32.9 minutes. However, the knee finally appeared to bother him in the past two games, when he shot a combined 3 of 19 for 10 points.

This means the Clippers will be without their top two small forwards (Lamar Odom Lamar Joseph Odom (born November 6 1979, in South Jamaica, Queens, New York) is an American professional basketball player who currently plays power forward (also plays both forward spots and is a "point-forward") for the National Basketball Association's Los Angeles Lakers.  is out with a a sore right ankle until at least Christmas), and Eric Piatkowski Eric Todd Piatkowski (pronounced IPA: /ˌpaɪətˈkaʊski/) (born September 30, 1970, in Steubenville, Ohio) is an American National Basketball Association player with the Phoenix Suns.  likely will play more small forward. On Tuesday, rookie Marko Jaric started.

``It's the same way we'll approach it without Lamar,'' coach Alvin Gentry said. ``We can sit here and whine about it, but that's no good. Injuries are a part of the game.''

Maggette is expected to have surgery by the end of the week. He originally showed swelling in his right knee Nov. 3 but played in 11 games with the cartilage tear.

``I think he pushed it to the point of losing his effectiveness,'' Gentry said. ``And one thing about Corey, if he says he's hurt, then he's really hurt.''

--Ely activated: In place of Maggette, the Clippers activated rookie Melvin Ely, who had been on the injured list all season with a sprained left foot. The team also might have chosen to activate small forward Tremaine Fowlkes, who was placed on the injured list Friday.

--A chat with Stu: Gentry said he called Stu Jackson, the NBA's senior vice president of basketball operations, and had a conversation about the call on Andre Miller for stepping over the free-throw line during Sunday's 90-89 victory over the Houston Rockets.

Miller didn't appear to go over the line, hadn't been called for the infraction Violation or infringement; breach of a statute, contract, or obligation.

all season and the call came at a critical time - with 1:03 left.

According to Gentry, Jackson said the coach had a point.

``He didn't feel it was shown conclusively that he went over the line,'' Gentry said.
