CLIPPERS NOTEBOOK: GENTRY FIRMLY DEFENDS NOT USING TIMEOUTS.

An emotional loss ended on an emotional note for Clippers coach Alvin Gentry Alvin Gentry is an American professional basketball coach, and college basketball player, who has led three different NBA teams. He served as an interim coach for the Miami Heat at the end of the 1995 season, and later coached the Detroit Pistons and the Los Angeles Clippers. .

In a postgame news conference, Gentry was candid about the Clippers' problems. But when a reporter asked the coach about his use of timeouts, Gentry needed a timeout.

Instead, he let off some steam.

``That's your opinion,'' Gentry said. ``Write that the coach (messed) it up.''

Gentry didn't use a timeout even though Boston made a 10-0 run to start the fourth quarter and tie the game. There was an official timeout during the run, but Gentry did not use one.

In the second quarter, the Clippers saw a 35-17 lead become a 35-23 lead, causing Gentry to call timeout. He didn't use another one until Boston had pulled to within 40-36.

Miles attended East St. Louis High School, and, after failing to receive a qualifying SAT score to attend St.
 started in Odom's place but said he prefers to come off the bench.

``I don't like starting,'' Miles said. ``I like to come in and give the team some tempo.''

--Records abound: Several team records were set by the Clippers in Saturday's loss. L.A. had a franchise-best 48 defensive rebounds as it outrebounded the Celtics 66-48.

Miles had a career high with eight assists. His previous high was five.

``I feel good, but I got to get my wind back,'' Piatkowski said. ``I've been out two and a half to three weeks, and I haven't even practiced. It will take time to get back to where I should be.''
