CLIPPERS NOTEBOOK: DUNLEAVY LEFT HAWKS BEHIND.

Byline: Joe Stevens Staff Writer

Mike Dunleavy Mike Dunleavy is the name of two notable persons in basketball, father and son:
  • Mike Dunleavy, Sr. is a former NBA player and is the current coach of the Los Angeles Clippers.
  • Mike Dunleavy, Jr.
kept waiting and waiting ... and waiting and waiting. And he never became the Atlanta Hawks' coach.

But the first-year Clippers coach was poised to guide Atlanta's team if a particular ownership group bought the team. As it turned out, Dunleavy couldn't sit back anymore. So he signed with the Clippers on a four-year, $10 million deal.

Had the McDavid Ownership Group purchased the Hawks quicker, he would have been on the other sideline during the Clippers' home opener tonight against Atlanta.

Dunleavy is a personal friend of David McDavid and the Texas businessman's family. For the entire summer, a deal from AOL (A division of Time Warner, Inc., New York, NY, www.aol.com) The world's largest online information service with access to the Internet, e-mail, chat rooms and a variety of databases and services.  Time Warner to McDavid's group appeared imminent. But nothing materialized.

``It seemed like they were going to get the team,'' Dunleavy said. ``But as time went forward, it just kept dragging and dragging and dragging.''

Dunleavy didn't want to jeopardize being left out of coaching, so he left the possibility of going to Atlanta for the Clippers. He did that, even though he perceived the Hawks job as highly desirable.

``What I liked about it then was the fact that Atlanta is going to have incredible salary-cap room in two years,'' Dunleavy said. ``The ownership is committed to winning, and Atlanta is a city that has never been great for drawing fans unless the teams won. But I think if you win, the fans will come. And it's a place players will go to.''

When asked if he expects Rice to be available then, Dunleavy said: ``I would doubt it.''
