Baylor was a gifted shooter, a strong rebounder, and an accomplished passer. , the Clippers' vice president of basketball operations, kept Douglas, who averaged 8 points and 4 assists as a backup for the Nets last season as the ace up his sleeve.

When Strickland re-signed with the Wizards on Wednesday, Douglas-to-the-Clippers was back on.

``If the deal goes through,'' Ford said, ``hopefully we can have him at practice tomorrow (today).''

Ford said he has spoken to Martin and Pooh Richardson, his current backup, about making room for Douglas.

``They said they understood,'' Ford said. ``I just wanted to be honest with them.''
