coach Alvin Gentry Alvin Gentry is an American professional basketball coach, and college basketball player, who has led three different NBA teams. He served as an interim coach for the Miami Heat at the end of the 1995 season, and later coached the Detroit Pistons and the Los Angeles Clippers.  wanted for training camp. After the best scrimmage of camp the day before, the Clippers didn't execute well in their final practice Monday at the College of the Desert.

The result was the reality of a young team blending a number of new players with a new coach.

``It wasn't as good as I would have liked,'' Gentry said of the practice. ``I thought we lost our concentration a little bit. I think we still had good effort, but we've got to start playing a little bit smarter basketball and I don't think we did that today. We've got a young team and things like this are going to happen.''

Throughout the seven-day training camp, Gentry stressed that molding this team was going to be a slow process. The process has taken longer than even Gentry anticipated.
