  • , a Rhino Records box set of non-U.S.
, who followed the lead of alpha dog Nick Van Exel Nickey (Nick) Maxwell Van Exel (born November 27 1971 in Kenosha, Wisconsin) is a retired American professional basketball player in the NBA. Van Exel, a 6'1" left-handed point guard, was most well known for his flashy style of play and his ability to hit critical shots during  and trotted off with a 103-101 victory in front of 9,450 at the Sports Arena.

``I thought it was a well-played game throughout,'' said Clippers coach Chris Ford Christopher Joseph Ford (born January 11, 1949 in Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA) is a former professional basketball player and head coach. A 6' 5" (1.96 m) guard from Villanova University, he played ten seasons (1972-1982) in the NBA as a member of the Detroit Pistons and Boston , in a declaration that - in these parts - could be answered with a lightning bolt. But Ford wasn't woofin'; his 7-33 team was guilty of seven of the game's measly measly

15 turnovers. In review, there was scoring, an occasional outbreak of defense, Indiana farm-boy free-throw shooting (Denver made its first 26 and finished 27 of 29), not to mention a fair share of game-ending ethos and pathos.

``They just happened to make the last shot,'' Ford said.

The closing nail in question was driven home with 5.5 seconds left by Van Exel on a 21-footer over the sticky defense of Troy Hudson. That pushed the ex-Laker's point total to a game-high 34, inspired a howl of vindication from a substantial pack of diehard Lakers/Van Exel fans and claimed victory for the worst road team since ``Thelma and Louise.'' The 13-29 Nuggets now are 2-20 outside Denver.

``I always love playing here (Sports Arena), because it has such a college atmosphere,'' said Van Exel, who had 41 points in a recent losing return to the Forum recently. His late heroics included a stunning 20-footer from the left baseline that gave Denver a 101-99 lead with 36.5 to play. ``There are always a lot of young kids here yelling and screaming.''

And a few Clippers pups swearing in private.

``He's a good player and he had it cooking at the end,'' said Hudson, the Clippers' understudy at point guard. ``Whenever you play a player like that, you've got to bring your `A' game.''

Clippers power forward Maurice Taylor earned his letter by scoring a career-high 26 points.
