But luckily for the Clippers, the Mavericks had just eight players suited up a day after making the biggest trade in team history and were essentially an NBA pickup team. Example: The starting center was Greg Dreiling Gregory Alan Dreiling (born November 7, 1962 in Wichita, Kansas) is a former professional basketball player. A 7'1" center from the University of Kansas, he was selected by the Indiana Pacers in the second round of the 1986 NBA Draft. .

With neither of the four acquired Dallas players available, the Clippers (21-27) were able to get away with a shabby performance, beating the Mavericks 87-69 in front of an announced crowd of 6,592 at the Sports Arena.

The Mavericks (17-32) at least had an excuse. They had no starters left from 10 days ago and presented minimal resistance. However, the Clippers obliged by playing as awful as possible.

Malik Sealy Malik Sealy (February 1, 1970 – May 20, 2000) was an American professional basketball player from 1992 until his death in an automobile accident. Sealy played eight seasons in the NBA for the Indiana Pacers, the Los Angeles Clippers, the Detroit Pistons, and the Minnesota  (23) was the only Clipper to score more than 11 points. The Clippers' 50-percent shooting was overshadowed by 23 turnovers, most of them terrible passes.

``It seemed for a while we couldn't make a play without making a turnover,'' Clippers coach Bill Fitch William Fitch (born May 19 1934 in Davenport, Iowa) is a former NBA coach who has been successful in making teams playoff contenders throughout his coaching career. Before entering the professional ranks he coached college ball at the University of Minnesota, Bowling Green State  said. ``When we stopped, we make a spurt, and then we started again.''

The Clippers went on a 19-7 run to start the fourth quarter and finally put away a Dallas team that was exhausted and played just a night before in Vancouver.

Instead of names like Jackson, Gatling and Cassell to prepare for, there was Danilovic, Dreiling and Muursepp. Obviously the Clippers were equally as confused as the short-handed Mavericks. Coach Jim Cleamons James Mitchell (Jim) Cleamons (born September 13 1949 in Lincolnton, North Carolina) is a retired American professional basketball player and current assistant coach. He has been an assistant under head coach Phil Jackson with both the Chicago Bulls and the Los Angeles Lakers.  tried to yell out plays, but Sasha Danilovic has been on the team five days, Dreiling never plays and Martin Muursepp is a rookie playing in his third NBA game.

Cleamons depended on 35-year-old Derek Harper Derek Ricardo Harper (born October 13 1961 in Elberton, Georgia) is a former professional basketball player from the University of Illinois, who spent 16 seasons as a point guard in the National Basketball Association with the Dallas Mavericks, New York Knicks, Orlando Magic and  and 33-year-old A.C. Green. But these guys are meant for spot duty, so 30-plus minutes simply was too much.

``They had tired legs and we just ran out of manpower,'' Cleamons said. ``We had some wonderful looks at the basket, just not enough energy in our legs to make them.''

Newly acquired Ed O'Bannon Edward Charles O'Bannon, Jr. (born August 14, 1972 in Los Angeles, California) is a former basketball player, who was a star small forward for the UCLA Bruins, where he was known as "Ed-O," but had a less-than-illustrious career as a professional basketball player.  and Robert Pack Robert John Pack (born February 3, 1969 in New Orleans, Louisiana) is an American former professional basketball player in the NBA. Nicknamed "Pac-Man", the 6'2" point guard had a thirteen season career in the NBA, most notably with the Denver Nuggets.  are expected to join the team next Tuesday while Shawn Bradley Shawn Paul Bradley (born March 22 1972) is a retired American 7 ft. 6 in. (2.29 m) basketball player who played center for the Dallas Mavericks (NBA). Born in Landstuhl, West Germany, Bradley grew up in Castle Dale, Utah, in the United States and has dual citizenship.  and Khalid Reeves could be in action Thursday.

The quick work of general manager Don Nelson might have taken the Mavericks right out of the Western Conference playoff race, which is good news to the Clippers, who don't need any more competition.

Their recent home success - seven of eight at the Sports Arena and Anaheim Arena - has compensated for serious road woes: five straight losses.

The Clippers wanted to use this game to pick up some momentum for a three-game East Coast road swing beginning Thursday in Philadelphia. This is one to forget.

``This was the weirdest game I've ever had to prepare for in my career,'' Sealy said. ``If every team wants to (make a trade) before they play us, that's fine with me.''

Sealy has regained his shooting stroke. He stayed in the 30-percentile from the field until a recent upsurge, hitting 51 of 102 (50 percent) of his shots in the past eight games. He hit 9 of his 13 shots on Tuesday.

Playing against an overmatched Danilovic, Sealy started well and that always is the key to his success.

``(Assistant coach) Barry Hecker said I needed to get my elbow up,'' Sealy said. ``When my shot is falling, everything feels good.''

Layups: Clippers center Stanley Roberts has yet to have back surgery and his availability for the playoffs is in question. He was supposed to have surgery last Monday but had a case of cold feet. Because of a scheduling problem, Roberts did not have surgery on Monday and his six-week rehabilitation period has not been reduced. To fill the spot of Kevin Duckworth, who was placed on the injured list, Dwayne Schintzius was activated for Tuesday's game but did not play.
