CLIPPERS: CLIPPERS STUCK IN REVERSE FAILING TO LIVE UP TO EXPECTATIONS SET BY LAST SEASON.

Byline: JOE STEVENS

Staff Writer

It will not be official until the Clippers' final game April 18.

But barring a dramatic statistical turnaround after the All-Star break, this is safe to say: The Clippers have digressed.

Last season, they finished 47-35 and came within one victory of the Western Conference finals.

This season, the Clippers will have to go 12-2 (.857) on the road in the second half to equal last season's record away from Staples Center This articlearticle or section has multiple issues:

, and they'll have to go 22-7 (.759) overall to finish with last season's record.

has pointed to inconsistent defense as a big reason why the Clippers have played below his expectations.

"We have to make some changes or something," Clippers center Chris Kaman Christopher Zane Kaman (born April 28 1982, in Grand Rapids, Michigan) is an American professional basketball player for the NBA's Los Angeles Clippers.

said last week. "Something has to happen, because we keep giving games away, and we shouldn't be. The ridiculous part of it all is that we have the same team we had last year, when we were in the second round of the playoffs. We even have a better team on paper."

The numbers support Dunleavy's assertion. The Clippers were first in the NBA NBA

in rebounding last season and are ranked 13th this season.

They were fourth in opposing field-goal percentage last season and are 13th this season.

"Last year, I always took solace in knowing that we were in the top five in defense in the whole league, and we were getting it done," Dunleavy said recently. "If we had a bad game here or there, I wasn't really worried because I knew we'd bounce back because our defense said we'll bounce back. That foundation said you're a playoff team, you'll be there "You'll Be There" is a single by American country music singer George Strait. "Right now, we're not there."

Dunleavy often points to turnovers as the team's biggest offensive problem. But statistically, the team has had a bigger drop in field-goal percentage than with turnovers.

With basically the same roster as last season, Dunleavy and many of his players have been baffled with the dropoff. While it's not that difficult to see the statistical change, explaining why the same players are performing much worse, Dunleavy said, "That's the $64-million question."
