Earlier this year, a presidential advisory committee recommended 10 waterways from Connecticut to Oregon for designation as American Heritage Rivers. They included the New River. The designation will allow communities to tap federal resources and expertise in protecting and restoring the waterway through a liaison called a river navigator. Launched by Clinton last fall, the program drew nominations for river restoration from communities across the nation. The nominees were reviewed by the advisory committee, informed of opposition by McKeon to inclusion of the Santa Clara River, and recommendations were forwarded to Clinton. After the New River ceremony, Clinton will travel to Raleigh to participate in political events for North Carolina Democrats, including John Edwards, a Senate candidate, McCurry said. The 10 rivers nominated by the advisory committee were: the Connecticut River in Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire New Hampshire, one of the New England states of the NE United States.
