CLI awarded new contracts from China totaling $5.1 million; first ISDN implementation in China; videoconferencing networks to be added in two new provinces.

They join a growing number of provinces, cities and counties building videoconferencing networks, bringing the total number of CLI videoconferencing sites to more than 320.

Ted Augustine, CLI vice president of government and international sales, said, "Videoconferencing is playing an important role in the modernization of the Chinese infrastructure by facilitating more frequent direct interaction between the Central government in Beijing, and key provincial, county and city officials. We are extremely pleased that the video quality of our product meets the high standards set by the Chinese governments."

The Province of Sichuan, which has 200 counties and the largest population (120 million) of any province in China, will connect 23 sites in Phase I of their implementation. The Province of Yunnan has 40 million people in 105 counties and will connect 17 sites within the province and 25 sites within four key cities in the province. Both provinces will use the Company's high-end, high-quality Radiance videoconferencing systems and Multipoint Control Units (MCUs). The Chinese videoconferencing networks use a total of 55 MCUs to enable multiple sites to simultaneously participate in the same conference and to serve as critical video hubs to link numerous sites connected via dedicated transmission lines.

The Radiance family of group videoconferencing systems achieves high-quality video at up to 30 frames per second and 480 lines of resolution The number of horizontal lines on a TV or computer screen.
