CLEVER GROWTH INDUSTRY FESTIVAL TO SHOW PLANTS HANDY FOR ARTS, CRAFTS.

PALMDALE - Some 45 artisans and merchants will sell decorated gourds and craft supplies at the sixth annual Gourd gourd (gôrd, grd), common name for some members of the Cucurbitaceae, a family of plants whose range includes all tropical and subtropical areas and extends into the temperate zones.  Festival today and Sunday at the Tree Mover Tree and Gourd Farm.

Gourds can be turned into musical instruments, human and animal figures, bowls, vases and other objects, festival organizers say. They can be painted, carved, stained or dyed.

 shop, will offer a kids' ``make-n-take'' classes for $2 both days. Thousands of dried hard-shell gourds will be available for sale, along with a tri-tip barbecue and smoothies. Visitors will be able to take a hay ride from the parking area to the vendor booths.

The festival will run today and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free but parking is $2.
