A year ago, the Cleveland High of Reseda swim team upset El Camino Real El Camino Real (Spanish for The Royal Road or The King's Highway) was the name of a series of pre-automobile highways linking the various New World colonies of Spain:

of Woodland Hills on the way to recording the best finish in school history at the City Section championships, second place for the girls and third place for the boys.

Now the biggest question is whether the Cavaliers, a team of just 34 swimmers when Teresa Frias took over as coach five seasons ago, can take the next step and win their first City championship next month.

Cleveland proved itself the class of the West Valley League on Thursday with a pair of convincing victories at Pierce College In 2006 the Library won a national Excellence award. Academics

The Cavaliers set winning both championships as their goal at the start of the season but are unsure yet where they stand.

Thursday afternoon, helping the Cavaliers to a 110-76 victory.

Cleveland took first and second in the 200 freestyle relay behind Deborah Hefter and Naomi Spindel's anchor legs. Then Hefter led Cleveland to a sweep of the first three places in the 100 backstroke, winning in 1 minute, 6.28 seconds.

Hefter started swimming the relay and backstroke back-to-back last season.

``It's a lot,'' Hefter said, ``because you do your 50, and then you have to run out, warm up, warm down, get it all together, check in and swim again.''

The Cleveland boys, meanwhile, swept every event in winning 122-61. Sweeney took first in the 200 freestyle (2:00.87) and 100 freestyle (54.93), all while waiting for the news about whether he has been accepted to Brown, Yale and Columbia.

``Today's probably the most tense afternoon of my life,'' Sweeney said. ``They say April 1, we'll e-mail you at 5 p.m. I've got a lot on my mind now, but I'm not letting it get to me.''
