CLEVELAND 10, BALTIMORE 4 : ORIOLES LEAD THE BEST-OF-FIVE SERIES 2-1 SUMMARY.

When it came time for Cleveland's Albert Belle
Albert Jojuan Belle (born August 25, 1966) is a former American Major League Baseball outfielder for the Cleveland Indians, Chicago White Sox, and Baltimore Orioles.
to produce, baseball's bad boy came through big-time. He crunched a grand slam grand slam

in the seventh inning to break a 4-4 tie and propel his team to a do-or-die victory.

    THE HERO

Belle, who batted .239 in the postseason last year and was 2 for 9 in the series before the homer, pushed the fans at Jacobs Field Coordinates:

when he slammed reliever Armando Benitez's 97-mph fastball into the left-field bleachers. When he came to bat again in the eighth, the fans were on their feet chanting ``MVP (Multimedia Video Processor) A high-speed DSP chip from Texas Instruments, introduced in 1994. Officially introduced as the TMS320C80, it combines RISC technology with the functionality of four DSPs on one chip. ! MVP!''

``Tonight's game was another piece of evidence that Albert has as much intensity as anyone I've ever seen,'' said Cleveland manager Mike Hargrove

After the home run Belle, emerged from the dugout for a curtain call, waving his arms and a white towel in the air. It was a rare gesture for this private and often controversial player.

      THE GOAT

Jesse Orosco didn't give up the grand slam, but he definitely set the stage. Orosco walked two batters before Cleveland sent up little Casey Candaele to pinch hit for Jim Thome. Candaele's assignment was to bunt the runners over, but when Orosco walked him too, the bases were loaded for Belle.

``Except for a couple of outings this year, he's probably been my best reliever,'' Baltimore manager Davey Johnson. ``It was really out of character.''

Orosco said he was having trouble gripping the ball because of the cold.

``I just couldn't get a feeling on the ball,'' Orosco said.

      WHAT DUEL?

The matchup of former Stanford pitchers Jack McDowell and Mike Mussina lasted only until the sixth inning, when McDowell was taken out despite having retired eight straight.

Mussina had retired seven straight when he was lifted in favor of Orosco to open the seventh. Mussina got off to a rocky start but had only thrown 99 pitches when manager Davey Johnson yanked him for Orosco before the seventh inning with the score 4-4.

      ONE DOWN . . .

Only four teams in baseball's 27-year playoff history have come back from 2-0 deficits to win the final three games. The Indians hope to become No. 5.

``One swing of the bat can change everything,'' said Thome, the Indians third baseman. ``But we're still down and we need to keep battling.''

      UPCOMING

David Wells, who allowed four runs in 6-2/3 innings in the Orioles' 10-4 Game 1 victory, faces Charles Nagy, a 17-game winner who was throttled by Baltimore for nine hits and seven runs in the series opener.
