WHAT: CLEO/QELS and PhAST Press-Only Luncheon
WHERE: 2006 CLEO/QELS and PhAST
Long Beach Convention Center
Room #103C
WHEN: Tuesday, May 23 at noon
WHO: Confirmed speakers and topics include:
-- Moderator and Opening Remarks - Tom Hausken, Strategies
Unlimited
-- Plans and Possibilities for Terahertz Imaging - David
Zimdars, Picometrix
Terahertz Imaging is used for better detection of weapons
and explosives for homeland security. THz imaging offers
advantages over other methods currently in practice,
including safety (no ionizing radiation, unlike x-ray
systems), resolution of details (about a millimeter in
size), and a better ability to discriminate between
similar materials (such as plastic explosives and
fertilizer). This technology has been used by NASA to peer
through the layer of spray-on foam insulation on the
external fuel tanks of the space shuttle Discovery and
inspect it for defects.
-- Imaging in the Mid-IR - Timothy Day, Daylight Solutions
Mid-IR lasers enable point-of-care facilities to perform a
non-invasive diagnostic exam on a patient's breath.
Ability to non-invasively diagnose a patient's condition
through breath analysis may help to move away from a
reliance on more costly, time-consuming and sometimes
uncomfortable medical procedures. Additionally, these
lasers will help with advancements in imaging, providing a
non-invasive approach to screenings such as cervical
cancer exams.
-- OCT Imaging - James Fujimoto, MIT
OCT Imaging opens new doors for non-invasive cancer
detection. Unlike other imaging modalities, optical
coherence tomography (OCT) and forms of spectroscopy, have
the potential to distinguish between cancerous and
non-cancerous cells without the need for biopsy,
quickening diagnosis time and also decreasing the need for
invasive procedures.
* Reporters are invited to call in for this press-only luncheon if attending in person is not possible. The call-in call-in adj. Being in a format such that listeners or viewers are invited to have their telephone conversations with the host or guests on a show broadcast to other listeners: a call-in radio show. n. number is 877-241-3594 and the pass code is 84051. |
