CLEANUP RULES MULLED; TOUGHER STANDARDS MAY BE USED AT LAB.

The Department of Energy is willing to consider using stricter standards to clean up nuclear contamination at Rocketdyne's Santa Susana Santa Susana can refer to several places:
  • The Santa Susana Mountains in southern California
  • Santa Susana Pass, running through the abovementioned mountains
  • Santa Susana Field Laboratory, near Los Angeles, a test facility for rockets and (formerly) nuclear reactors
 Field Lab, an official said Wednesday, but he warned that leaving less of the toxics behind would be costly.

However, officials said the standards being used, which allow more cancer risks than those suggested by the Environmental Protection Agency Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), independent agency of the U.S. government, with headquarters in Washington, D.C. It was established in 1970 to reduce and control air and water pollution, noise pollution, and radiation and to ensure the safe handling and , are consistent with those used nationwide for nuclear cleanup.

``We want to do the right thing,'' said DOE official Hannibal Joma. ``We don't want to break the bank. At the same time we don't want to leave contamination on that site.''

The pledge came during a meeting of the Santa Susana Field Lab Work Group, its first in a year. The group is made up of representatives of the community and government agencies monitoring the $148 million federally mandated toxic cleanup at the facility between Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  and Chatsworth.

``I don't think we in the community should be talking about money when we're talking about health,'' said Simi Valley resident and cancer survivor Dawn Kowalski. ``DOE should put some of the money they've made back into cleaning it up.''

Residents also told the 11-member panel that they wanted toxic testing of their neighborhoods to ensure they are not being exposed to health risks. So far, most testing has been done at the 2,600-acre facility or adjacent properties.
