CLEAN AIR VEHICLES TO BE SHOWCASED AT EARTHFEST '93

CLEVELAND, April 22 /PRNewswire/ -- As one of the major sponsors of EarthFest '93, East Ohio Gas will again participate in the "March to EarthFest" parade and showcase natural gas vehicles in both the parade and EarthFest activities at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo on Sunday, April 25.
On display from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the main entrance of the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo will be the City of Lakewood's natural gas 1993 Ford F350 dump truck with plow package and salt spreader, and a totally dedicated natural gas vehicle. A natural gas pickup truck and van will be featured in the "March to EarthFest" parade.
"East Ohio Gas has always followed an environmental agenda with its natural gas vehicle program," said Patrick A. Carney, vice president of public affairs for East Ohio Gas. "EarthFest gives East Ohio Gas a unique opportunity to emphasize the company's commitment to the environment and to show the public firsthand our clean-burning natural gas vehicles."
The East Ohio Gas Company is a pioneer in natural gas vehicle technology. The company, which began converting its fleet 10 years ago, now operates more than 600 natural gas vehicles, including cars, trucks and vans, making it one of the largest fleets in the United States.
Natural gas vehicles achieve a more than 90 percent reduction in reactive hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide emissions and a 30-70 percent reduction in nitrogen oxides, compared with gasoline. They also virtually eliminate many particulates associated with diesel engines.
Besides environmental benefits, natural gas is about 40-50 percent less expensive than diesel fuel and gasoline. Clean-burning natural gas also enables vehicle operators to reduce maintenance costs and extend engine life.
Another benefit of natural gas is that more than 93 percent of the natural gas used in the United States is domestically produced. This reduces U.S. dependence on foreign oil and fits with the national and Ohio energy strategies.
Many models of totally dedicated natural gas pickups, vans and passenger cars will be introduced by manufacturers between now and 1995. It is estimated that there are more than 750,000 natural gas vehicle that operates on natural gas is about $2,500 to $3,000.
Because a large network of public natural gas fueling stations has yet to be built, The East Ohio Gas Company is focusing its natural gas vehicle marketing efforts on fleet operations which travel limited distances and have central refueling facilities.
Cleveland-based East Ohio Gas is the largest subsidiary of Consolidated Natural Gas Company, headquartered in Pittsburgh. The 2,500 employees of East Ohio Gas serve more than one million residential, commercial and industrial customers in 270 northeast Ohio communities.
