Should Murray continue his improvement he will soon be closing in on the top two with Djokovic and second-ranked Roger Federer already feeling the pressure.

After Sunday night's victory, Murray immediately turned his attention to the clay season where he will compete in Monte Carlo, Rome and Madrid before the French Open in May.

He has previously struggled on clay - although showed improvement last year when he won his first games at Roland Garros to reach the third round.

Now he wants to build on his 2008 efforts and close in on the game's big guns.

Murray said: "I really want to try to improve my ranking and I think the clay court season will be very important for me.

"On the hard courts I think my game is up there with the top guys in the world.

"And on grass my game definitely got better last year.

"But on clay it hasn't been the same for me and that's where the top players have picked up a lot of points.

Improve

"If you got rid of the clay court season's points I think I would be very close to Roger and not too far behind Rafa.

"I need to improve my results on clay. If I do that, there's a chance I'll get higher."

Murray reached the last 16 last year in both Monte Carlo and Hamburg where he was beaten by Djokovic and Nadal respectively. And the US Open finalist is looking to improve his record.

He said: "I want to do better than I did last year and try to reach the quarter-finals of one of the big tournaments.

"There are two mandatory events this year before the French Open. I'm planning on playing Monte Carlo and I can use that to my advantage.

"There's not as much pressure playing there as there was before because it doesn't have to go towards your ranking.

"So I'll just try to work on my game like I have done on all the other courts.

"I have found playing on clay tough over the last few years but my game definitely got better last year."
