Thieves made off with about $3,000 in computer equipment from a special education class at Miller High School last weekend, police said Friday.

The suspects smashed a window to break into the advanced special education class and left with three monitors and several computers used regularly by the severely emotionally disturbed students, teachers and police said.

There are no suspects, said Richard Page For the musician, see .

He would not disclose the nature of the lead that investigators are pursuing.

``(The thieves) are taking advantage of handicapped kids,'' said Steve Medina, a teacher's assistant for the special education class of 10 students. ``They're taking away something from kids that really need the help.''

The burglary upset the students, who used the computers to learn how to tell time and use money, and for subjects like reading, math, geography and speech development, said Medina.

``The kids in that class are the highest functioning in the school and, bam, their computers are gone and we can't replace them,'' said Medina. The computers were not insured.

The only things left behind for the students were two ancient Apple computers, according to according to

LAUSD police, however, do not suspect an organized crime ring is involved and said this is the first computer theft in recent history at Miller High School.

``We have computer thefts on a fairly frequent basis, but we haven't had them out in that area for a while,'' said Page.

``Once we place computers in the schools, those are usually targeted equipment, but I would not say we're experiencing a real problem in that area,'' said Page.

The classroom did not have any security grills or a computer alarm, according to Medina. But Proposition BB funds will be used to install alarms in schools that don't have them now, said Page.

``We do have hundreds of alarm systems,'' said Page. ``Most of the schools that are unalarmed are in the Valley, but that problem is being rectified rectified
