Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown.  - Using story-telling and young actors, the New West Symphony was able to translate the often confusing world of classical music during special performances Tuesday for 3,000 local students at the Civic Arts Plaza.

Boris Brott Boris Brott (born March 14, 1944) is a Canadian conductor and motivational speaker.

Born in Montreal, the son of Alexander Brott, he was the music director of the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra and artistic director of the Stratford Summer Music Festival.
, conductor and music director of the New West captured the children's attention with the story of ``Tubby the Tuba,'' a narrative with emotions and feelings the students could understand.

Tubby personified a sad, sort of clumsy instrument that never got any attention in the orchestra. It then met a frog, which sounded similar and encouraged the large horn, which finally got to lead with his own melody.

``I like the music when they do the story,'' said 8-year-old Jordan Fiss of Meadows Elementary. ``And I like the tuba because it's loud.''

Lynn Decker-Mahin, educational coordinator for the New West Symphony, supported the story-telling method of musically enlightening children.

``When you combine the music with the story, the kids understand that the instruments really do talk,'' Decker-Mahin said.

``It's music that appeals to kids - they get to hear each section, then each individual instrument. Kids get to see it's not just all grown-ups.''

The event began with two child actors from the Gold Coast Conservatory reciting interesting facts about each instrument as it played. This witty exchange eventually illustrated how the many separate instruments join to become one audible work of art.

``And all together we produce this wonderful sound,'' Brott said as the notes

rose and fell. ``It's a matter of organizing the sounds so that they have a form, a structure - much like writing a story.''

With another series of similar performances today - this time a Mozart theme - another round of children will be able to ``Meet the Composer Meet the Composer is an American organization founded in 1974 by the composer John Duffy as a project of the New York State Council on the Arts.
