CLASSICAL/SNEAK PEEK : L.A. CHORALE READY TO ROLL.


A host of guest artists and the world premiere of Morten Lauridsen's ``Ave Maria'' highlight the Los Angeles Master Chorale's 34th season.

The 1997-98 season opens Oct. 25 with Beethoven's ``Missa Solemnis,'' featuring soprano Angela Maria Blasi. The production marks the return of mezzo-soprano mezzo-soprano: see soprano.  Christina Wilcox to the Master Chorale chorale (kōrăl`, –räl`), any of the traditional hymns of the German Protestant Church. The form was developed after the Reformation to replace the plainsong of the earlier service and as a means of congregational participation in , conducted by Paul Salamunovich.

The Nov. 23 event features the Albert McNeil Jubilee Singers making a return engagement. The repertoire focuses on spirituals, gospel numbers, calypso and work songs.

On Dec. 14, the chorale presents a traditional holiday concert that includes the premiere of ``Ave Maria,'' by composer-in-residence Lauridsen.

Feb. 28 sees the performance of Rachmaninoff's ``Vespers'' with contralto contralto (kəntrăl`tō), female voice of lowest pitch. Originally, the term denoted a second voice set against (contra) a high voice (alto); thus, a second high voice.  and tenor soloists to be announced To be announced (TBA)

All Master Chorale events take place at the Music Center of Los Angeles County, 135 N. LACO Winds, the acclaimed wind section of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra The Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (LACO) is a 40-member American chamber orchestra based in Los Angeles, California, praised by the music critic Jim Svejda as "America's finest chamber orchestra."[1].  (LACO), is bringing a touch of Mozart and Rossini to the Hollywood Hills on Sept. 8.

The ``Figaro and Friends'' program at the John Anson Ford Amphitheatre includes opera suites from Rossini's ``The Barber of Seville'' and Mozart's ``The Marriage of Figaro,'' followed by Mozart's Serenade No. 10 in B-flat.

The performances, under the direction of new music director Jeffrey Kahane, will be augmented by narration from Alan Chapman and Karen Benjamin.

LACO starts its 29th season next month.
