CLARiiON premieres new enterprise disk arrays at UniForum '96; silicon graphics to display one terabyte file system on CLARiiON disk arrays.

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 12, 1996--The CLARiiON Business Unit of Data General Corp. will demonstrate new product enhancements to its industry leading CLARiiON (C2000 series) high availability Also called "RAS" (reliability, availability, serviceability) or "fault resilient," it refers to a multiprocessing system that can quickly recover from a failure. There may be a minute or two of downtime while one system switches over to another, but processing will continue.  storage subsystems for the first time at UniForum '96, held in San Francisco San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden  February 12-16, 1996.

The new models, 2800, 2810 and 2900, deliver greater performance and enable future capacity and caching expansion for enterprise storage environments. CLARiiON will also offer a glimpse of the future of CLARiiON mass storage systems at the show, displaying the Series 200, which features Fibre Channel technology - the next generation serial interface.

Throughput, or I/Os per second, of the new Series 2000 arrays is increased from 2 to 2.5 times the current generation product, as well as reducing response time by more than half. The new array's performance is facilitated by the Motorola(TM) Power PC microprocessor (603e). All of the CLARiiON unique data integrity and high availability features have been maintained in the new models.

"With the growth of applications such as data warehousing See data warehouse.

, the demand for secure, affordable, and high performance storage for mission-critical data is exploding," said Larry Hemmerich, vice president and general manager, CLARiiON Business Unit. "The demonstration of our new disk array subsystems answer this demand with a more cost-effective solution than any other storage alternatives, while providing the data integrity and data availability Refers to the degree to which data can be instantly accessed. The term is mostly associated with service levels that are set up either by the internal IT organization or that may be guaranteed by a third party datacenter or storage provider.  required by today's client server commercial applications."

The new models support up to twenty - 3.5 inch SCSI SCSI

drives per chassis and are targeted at medium-to-large-scale, open heterogeneous-server, computing environments. Current total capacity per chassis (deskside and rackmount) is 84GB utilizing 4.2GB drives and will begin shipping in early March. List pricing for the new models will be as low as $1.53 per megabyte for heavily configured models.

The new products deliver on the CLARiiON strategic initiative to provide enterprise storage solutions with connections to the top open platforms, terabyte capacity, high availability software extensions, and proven data integrity and availability features.

Also at the booth, CLARiiON will provide a preview of its product efforts with Fibre Channel, connected to both Sun and Alpha servers. The Series 200 will display advanced technology for connection to Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loop A ring topology used in Fibre Channel. Up to 127 devices may be attached in the loop, but only two can communicate at the same time, reflecting the channel nature of Fibre Channel technology.  (FC-AL (Fibre Channel-Arbitrated Loop) See Fibre Channel.

Designed for mission-critical applications, the Series 200 products will offer fibre channel technology in both rackmount and office versions.

CLARiiON and Silicon Graphics

CLARiiON will be featured at the Silicon Graphics Inc. booth No. 1449 at UniForum, demonstrating terabyte-class storage capability in conjunction with Silicon Graphics' IRIS FailSafe(TM) high availability product. This demonstration, highlighting the strong OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) The rebranding of equipment and selling it. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and  relationship between the two companies, exemplifies the commitment of CLARiiON to provide enterprise storage solutions.

"Silicon Graphics' OEM relationship with CLARiiON is extremely important - considering the IRIS FailSafe(TM) product depends on the fault tolerant features inherent in all CLARiiON models," said Raj Das, product manager of Silicon Graphics' Network Systems Division. "We look forward to working with the CLARiiON Business Unit in the future to continue to develop multi-terabyte storage solutions."
