CLARiiON introduces Series 3000 disk arrays for enterprise wide, mission-critical computing environments.LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 19, 1996-- Series 3000 disk arrays significantly lower cost/MB, support multi-terabytes of capacity, and offer a future upgrade path to fibre channel CLARiiON, the world's leading provider of open RAID-based disk array storage solutions and a business unit of Data General Corp., today announced from Comdex '96 that it has extended its family of industry leading disk arrays, with the CLARiiON Series 3000. The high-end Series 3000 significantly lowers cost per megabyte (MB), providing a large-scale storage solution for open environments, and is the first CLARiiON disk array to offer a future upgrade path to fibre channel host interface support. The Series 3000 substantially lowers the cost per MB for CLARiiON arrays and increases the capacity per square foot by providing up to 30 3.5-inch drives per enclosure and up to 90 drives in a rackmount cabinet. Previously, the maximum number of drives supported in a rackmount cabinet were 80. The Series 3000 can now deliver capacity for three-terabytes of storage in a footprint of under twenty square feet. This growth in capacity makes it particularly well-suited for mission-critical, multi-terabyte applications such as data warehousing See data warehouse. data warehousing - data warehouse , where high-availability and data integrity are essential. The CLARiiON Series 3000 also delivers attributes such as: a completely redundant subsystem architecture to protect against component failures, on-line maintenance for easy and fast "hot-plugging" of system components, and an advanced system design which includes mirrored write cache to increase performance while maintaining data integrity. CLARiiON has also designed the Series 3000 to support emerging technologies. Current controllers will be upgradable to provide fibre channel host connections. As fibre channel technology becomes the basic building block for solving high-end computing problems, the Series 3000 array will provide modular, unlimited expansion. "CLARiiON is committed to delivering to its customers industry leading storage technology with an eye towards the future," said Peter Gibbs Peter Gibbs is a BBC Weather forecaster, born in Sunderland, who appears regularly on BBC One, BBC News 24, BBC World and BBC Radio, particularly BBC Radio Four. He is a main weather presenter on the BBC Six O'Clock News, and was previously a main weather presenter on the BBC One , director of marketing for CLARiiON. "Customers who purchase the Series 3000 today will be able to take full advantage of current CLARiiON performance, cost-effectiveness and scalability. And, the array will support migration to fibre channel host interface technology, without having to purchase an entirely new storage system." "IDC believes that there are only a select number of vendors demonstrating the ability to develop an Enterprise Disk Array which offers high-availability design, performance tuning Performance tuning is the improvement of system performance. "The Series 3000 has all of these characteristics, affirming CLARiiON's commitment to being a leader in the disk subsystems marketplace."
