CLARiiON first to ship over one petabyte of RAID-protected storage.

SOUTHBORO, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 18, 1997--

CLARiiON Maintains Leadership Position in Worldwide Open

Storage Market -- Shipping 40,000th Disk Array

CLARiiON, the world's leading provider of open RAID-based storage solutions and a business unit of Data General Corporation, today announced that it is the first open RAID storage supplier to surpass the one petabyte One quadrillion bytes (one trillion kilobytes). Also PB, Pbyte and P-byte. See peta, binary values and space/time.

(unit) petabyte - 2^50 = 1,125,899,906,842,624 bytes = 1024 terabytes or roughly 10^15 bytes. 1024 petabytes is one exabyte.
(i.e., 1,000 terabytes) of RAID-protected usable storage capacity shipment mark. A petabyte of stored information is the equivalent of 400 billion typed pages or enough paper to circle the earth 50 times.

The key industry milestone coincided with the recent shipment of the 40,000th CLARiiON disk array. The company added that, at its current shipment rate, the 50,000th CLARiiON disk array is expected to ship this Summer.

"As CLARiiON does not sell directly to end-users, CLARiiON market share is not truly represented by revenue results alone," said Larry Hemmerich, vice president and general manager for CLARiiON. "A better indication of our true market share is provided by the shipment of usable capacity - not just raw capacity, as so much storage today is configured as mirrored."

"These shipment numbers confirm the worldwide industry acceptance and leadership position of CLARiiON high performance, high availability Also called "RAS" (reliability, availability, serviceability) or "fault resilient," it refers to a multiprocessing system that can quickly recover from a failure. There may be a minute or two of downtime while one system switches over to another, but processing will continue.  RAID storage technology," said Hemmerich, who noted that two-thirds of its petabyte of storage has been shipped since the beginning of 1996.

"IDC estimates that CLARiiON has shipped over $710 million in external mid-range storage over the last 3 years," said Tom Lahive, industry analyst at International Data Corp. (IDC). "This announcement is indicative of the CLARiiON unit's industry leading success in the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) The rebranding of equipment and selling it. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and  storage market."
