LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 12, 1996--Tourism and trade continued their strong growth in the Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California.  and domestic passengers compared with the same period last year.

"The business community is taking advantage of LAX's rapid access to global markets, while vacationers are enjoying discounted airfares and direct flights to and from cities around the world," added Driscoll.

Domestic passengers totaled 21,183,749 up 9.1 percent, and international travelers reached 6,807,554, up 7.7 percent. Aircraft operations (takeoffs/landings) rose 8.6 percent to 379,097. Air cargo air cargo: see aviation.  (freight and mail) grew 9.0 percent to 905,287 tons, a record cargo total for a six-month period.

Ontario International Airport, also operated by the department, recorded a 10.9 percent increase in air cargo to 207,042 tons. Domestic passengers decreased 0.7 percent to 3,071,049; and aircraft movements were down 1.4 percent to 75,624. Driscoll attributed the passenger decline to competitive airline fares offered at other airports in Los Angeles and Orange Counties.

The Antelope Valley
 reported an increase of 69.8 percent in air freight to 1.59 tons. Aircraft movements rose to 1,969, up 6.1 percent. Passenger loads declined 12.6 percent to 9,214 passengers.
