NOTE TO EDITORS: The following is being reissued to clarify the

first paragraph only, from BW1360. The following is the correct

release in its entirety.

MARIETTA, Ga.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 22, 1999--Lockheed Martin was awarded an initial development contract worth $120 million for the C-5 Avionics Modernization Program (AMP) to integrate an advanced flight control and communication/navigation system, as well as instrument displays, in U.S. Air Force Galaxy transport aircraft. The full contract has potential value of $450 million.

Under the program, the Lockheed Martin For the former company, see .

"We are excited about this opportunity to work with the Air Force on this critical project that will enhance the capability of the C-5 fleet," said Bill Bullock, president of Lockheed Martin Aeronautical aer·o·nau·tic   also aer·o·nau·ti·cal

The airframe of the C-5 has some 80 percent of its service life left, but reliability is lower than desired by Air Mobility Command. To make the best use of resources and budget, the Air Force opted to upgrade the systems while maintaining the airframe that has served so well through the years.

The AMP program is the first stage of this complete C-5 modernization. The Air Force also has plans to re-engine the aircraft and make other system upgrades to further enhance reliability. Lockheed Martin is teamed with GE Aircraft Engines in offering the CF6-80C2 series engine, which has more than 40 million hours of airline service, and boasts a 99.9 percent reliability rate with commercial operators.

The new engines would produce 22 percent more takeoff thrust than the current engines and will provide a greater operational capability in time-to-climb, takeoff roll and operational ceiling. The C-5 will also meet Federal Aircraft Regulations Part 36 Stage 3 noise requirements with the GE engines.
