Probably founded in Roman times, Grasse was a commercial center during the Middle Ages. Destroyed many times by the Saracens, it was an independent republic from the 12th cent. until its union with the earldom of Provence in 1226. In 1536 the town was destroyed by Francis I to prevent the advance of Emperor Charles V. the initiative is helping to restore. Last year CLA members Bayer CropScience, DuPont, Dow AgroSciences, Monsanto, SePro and Syngenta donated 5,741 gallons of herbicides, 296 lbs. of granular herbicides, and 140 gallons of fungicides--a total value of $350,000. This year the program has expanded, and with $500,000 in support. |
