CIVIL WAR AFICIONADOS TO HOLD DINNER-DISCUSSSION.

Byline: DIANA PEYTON Community Columnist

Inspiration and interest in the Civil War came to Woodland Hills dentist Jeffrey Wissot about six years ago while he was in Virginia enrolling his son in school.

It was his first visit to the area, and he found Gettysburg spellbinding spell·bind

``I was absolutely mesmerized, I never appreciated the impact of Gettysburg until I was there on the grounds,'' he said. ``Much of the Gettysburg history overlaps our social and political issues of today.''

The historical sight was so moving to Wissot that when the trailer for the movie ``Gettysburg'' appeared on the screen while he was finding his seat in a theater one day, he was stunned stun

``I stood there frozen,'' he said.

He had to see the movie. ``The same day I canceled all my patients and sat for 4-1/2 hours enthralled en·thrall

Sharing his enthusiasm with a few close friends, he started to meet regularly with them in a group drawn by a common interest in the Civil War. They call themselves the Civil Warriors Round Table.

Weiler's West Hills Deli will serve up more than pastrami on rye Wednesday. Its doors will be open to the group which now has about 45 members.

Cleaning up the community takes a little elbow grease and an energetic group of teens who happen to get paid for doing the right thing.

The Anheuser-Busch Company in Van Nuys has donated $40,000 to the New Directions Youth organization in Van Nuys to sponsor the Green Team - a program to improve the community through graffiti removal, litter cleanup and beautification beau·ti·fy

, vice president of operations at New Directions. He says the program teaches important job skills, teamwork, trust, integrity and respect. The benefit is a clean neighborhood.

The Anheuser-Busch company came to the New Directions program three or four years ago with ``a pot of money wanting to do something in the community,'' Jackson said.

The program hires young people who have written essays about why their community needs to be clean.

Current projects include cleanup around the Anheuser-Busch plant in Van Nuys.

Some local volunteers have received Community Champion Awards from Prudential Insurance Company of America.

Ann Carpenter of Encino helps at the Pacoima Junior Optimist Foundation. She drives youths from the group to field trips, meetings and cleanup projects in the community. The group will receive $250 in her behalf from Prudential.

A donation of $1,000 on behalf of Jamie Daquino will be given to the Steven S. Cohen cohen
