CIVIL AIR PATROL GIVES SALUTE TO 50-YEAR PHOTOGRAPHER.

Maj. Al Meryman was honored Wednesday at Whitman Airport for 50 years of service to the Civil Air Patrol
The U.S. Civil Air Patrol (CAP) is the civilian auxiliary of the United States Air Force (USAF). It was created on 1 December, 1941 by Administrative Order 9, with Maj. Gen. John F.
 as a staff photographer.

Meryman joined in 1948 after he served in seven campaigns in World War II.

Meryman, an Arleta resident, spent the past 50 years chronicling the history of the California wing of the Civil Air Patrol.

``He takes all the photos and pays for them himself,'' said 1st Lt. Nikki Vaughan. ``He is a really kind person and this is his way of rewarding everyone for a job well done.''

At 91, Meryman is still a passenger and aerial photographer during search and rescue missions.

In 1943, the patrol was assigned to the War Department, under which it assisted with sinking two enemy submarines and rescuing hundreds of crash survivors during World War II.

In 1948, Congress passed a law that made the patrol an auxiliary of the Air Force.

Just when you thought the cost of child care might keep you from taking or keeping a job, along comes a possible answer.

Mission College's Family Child Care Homes Network offers care for infants and toddlers from low-income families.

The service, available Monday through Saturday, was formed by Mission College with a $500,000 grant from the state Department of Education.

``We found that our community needed 24-hour infant and toddler care, and our licensed child care homes are able to provide it,'' said Julie Ruelas, director of the program.

Ruelas said she is awaiting authorization from the state to expand the network into North Hollywood and Tujunga.
