CIVIC DUTY DRAWS VOTERS HIGH TURNOUT AT BRIDGEPORT.

 Mikaela Labrador walked out of the Bridgeport School polling location Tuesday morning holding her mother's hand after both cast their ballots.

``It's very important in our family that we vote. It's our American right,'' said Shannan Labrador, who has always taken her daughter along to vote even though the youngster's didn't count.

Exercising the right to vote has been important in Labrador's family since she became eligible at 18, and she intends to teach that respect for the democratic process to her daughter.

``We want her to know the excitement of taking part in an election,'' Labrador said.

That sense of civic duty seemed to draw voters to the polls at Bridgeport in the face of low voter VOTER. By 1 p.m., county officials estimated voter turnout was 13 percent less than in the 2000 general election.

But at Bridgeport Elementary, about 100 people had already voted by 9:30 a.m., taking some of the volunteers by surprise.

``I don't want Simon to win, because he's highly against choice,'' said Olson, who votes every year.

As part of their yearly ritual, the Labradors planned to spend Tuesday evening watching election results while explaining to their daughter how they voted and who they would like to win.
