CITY WILL SEND DELEGATES TO SISTER CITY GROUP LEAVING FOR ARMENIA.

GLENDALE - An 18-member delegation from Glendale city government and schools will travel this week to Armenia - homeland of Glendale's largest immigrant group - in a first official sister city visit.

City Manager Jim Starbird; Mayor Frank Quintero; Councilman Rafi Manoukian Rafi Manoukian is a former member of the city council in Glendale, California. He was recently notified that he has been selected by the Board of Directors and the Selection Committee of the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations (NECO) as a recipient of the 2006 Ellis Island ; Glendale High School Glendale High School can refer to:

  • Glendale High School (Tillsonburg, Ontario)
Another school with a similar name:

, will be among the group leaving Thursday to visit Ghapan, established as a Glendale sister city in December.

Planners hope the trip will spur an exchange of programs, employees, expertise and students between Glendale and Ghapan, one of Armenia's oldest cities, located about 200 miles southeast of the capital of Yerevan.

The delegation will meet with the mayor of Ghapan, the region's governor, Armenia's prime minister, the minister of social security and the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The remaining 11, including businessmen and community activists, will pay their own way.

Ghapan, with a population of about 55,000, is one of the main cultural centers in Armenia, with libraries, museums, theater companies and dozens of schools. It also has active agricultural and industrial centers.

``Hopefully, we will get more familiar with the culture of that city, their infrastructure, their form of government,'' Councilman Manoukian said.

Glendale Unified School District The Glendale Unified School District is a school district based in Glendale, California, United States.

The school district serves the city of Glendale, portions of the city of La Cañada and the unincorporated communities of Montrose and La Crescenta.
 board president Pam Ellis said she hopes the exchange of information will benefit both cities.

``We have so many students in our district of Armenian descent and many who have emigrated from Armenia, so I think that understanding our students and their cultural situation is only going to help us do a better job,'' Ellis said.
