CITY TO STUDY CLOSING STREETS FOR AUTO MALL.

Byline: Helen Gao Staff Writer

GLENDALE - Seeking to expand their businesses and upgrade to a more plaza-like auto mall environment, dealerships on South Brand Boulevard have proposed closing portions of four streets and three alleyways.

The City Council, acting as the Redevelopment Agency, voted 4-1 Tuesday to allocate $40,000 to hire engineers to determine the traffic impact of the closures. Mayor Gus Gomez voted no, saying the dealers themselves should pay for the study.

  • Michael Hastings, Baron Hastings of Scarisbrick
, a representative for the dealerships, said the street and alley closures would not only improve the appearance of the area, but also help dealers expand, leading to more tax revenues for the city.

``Some of the dealerships own property on both sides of a side street. It doesn't look cohesive cohesive,

Dealers have agreed to pay for the cost of improving the closed streets. They envision beautifying those streets with trees and transforming them into entrances to their businesses.

Hastings estimates the street closures could enable auto dealers to add as many as 200 cars to their lots.

``I recognize the value of the income that will come into the city by these efforts,'' he said, in voting for the study.
