CITY TO HELP FUND POLICE MEMORIAL.

Byline: Nick Grudin Staff Writer

GLENDALE - The City Council agreed Tuesday to give $150,000 to help build a memorial for Glendale's slain police officers, and the council also voted to plan a possible Sept. 11 memorial.

. That's what this (police) memorial is all about,'' said former Mayor Sheldon Baker, the police memorial project's leader.

designed by artist M. L. Snowden, would stand at the entrance of the new $50 million Police Department headquarters.

The memorial's cost will run higher than $500,000 and has been primarily funded by private donations.

Tuesday night, the council voted 4-1 to help fund the project, with the lone ``nay'' coming from Councilman Dave Weaver

, who said that now is not the time to spend more money.

``With a $21 billion state deficit, this is not the right time for this,'' Weaver said. ``The state is going to come after us.''

But the rest of the council agreed that the memorial was worth the financial impact.

``I get the opportunity today to say thank you to the police of this community,'' said Councilman Bob Yousefian, who added that he is proud to be on the council that helps see this memorial through.

``We have 200,000 people in this city - $150,000 amounts to less than a dollar per person,'' Councilman Gus Gomez said.

The statue will pay tribute to the four Glendale officers who lost their lives on duty, officials said.

Another factor in the decision was a recently passed federal bill written by Rep (programming) REP - A directive used in IBM object code card decks (and later PTF Tapes) to REPlace fragments of already assembled or compiled object code prior to link edit. . Adam Schiff

The memorial's planners were pleased with the outcome.

``We are really happy that the city stepped forward and did this,'' said Sgt. Mario Marchman, president of the Glendale Police Officers Association.

The council also voted 4-1 to assign city staff to consider creating a 9-11 memorial, which would likely be at the Civic Center, according to according to

City staffers will consider locations and then assemble a committee to raise money for it.
