CITY TO HAND OUT FREE USED OIL RECYCLING KITS.

SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  -- The City of Santa Clarita will distribute free used oil recycling kits to residents at Charity Cruise Night beginning at 6 p.m. June 3 at Valencia AutoSpa in Valencia.

The kits, funded by a grant from the California Integrated Waste Management Board, include a collection container, funnel, shop rag, filter bag, spill mat and tire gauge. The city is distributing the kits to increase participation in the curbside used oil and filter recycling program.

Used oil can contain such contaminants as lead, magnesium, copper, zinc, chromium chromium (krō`mēəm) [Gr.,=color], metallic chemical element; symbol Cr; at. no. 24; at. wt. 51.996; m.p. about 1,857°C;; b.p. 2,672°C;; sp. gr. about 7.2 at 20°C;; valence +2, +3, +6. , arsenic, chlorides, cadmium cadmium (kăd`mēəm) [from cadmia, Lat. for calamine, with which cadmium is found associated], metallic chemical element; symbol Cd; at. no. 48; at. wt. 112.41; m.p. 321°C;; b.p. 765°C;; sp. gr. 8.  and chlorinated chlorinated /chlo·ri·nat·ed/ (klor´i-nat?ed) treated or charged with chlorine.

 compounds. Oil poured down drains or onto the ground can work its way into ground and surface waters, causing serious pollution problems.

One gallon of used oil can foul a million gallons of drinking water drinking water

After picking up kits, residents can call Curbside Inc. at (800) 449-7587 to schedule home collection of the oil and filters. Residents also may take their used oil and filters to a local certified collection center. For a list of locations, call (800) 253-2687 or visit www.1800cleanup.org.
