It's just a shame then that the pair are unlikely to last long at City. Both men are merely interim choices before the club can spend some serious money in the summer.

Hughes has a fine managerial pedigree but he will be replaced by the summer with a higher profile boss.

And Bellamy's eighth club in nine seasons is also unlikely to be his last. It is hard to imagine the former Reds striker is anything more than a short-term solution.

Aside from injuries, Bellamy's failure to settle at a club has been his greatest hindrance to realising his potential.

Even if Bellamy didn't feel he owed West Ham's fans, perhaps he owed it to himself to stay at Upton Park.
