CITY STREETS TO SHUT DOWN FOR MARATHON.

SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  - A number of Santa Clarita streets will be closed early Sunday as hundreds of runners participate in the city's 10th annual marathon.

--Planned closures are:

--McBean Parkway from Magic Mountain Parkway to Valencia Boulevard from 6 to 7 a.m.

--Westbound Valencia, detour to Citrus Avenue, from 6 to 7:10 a.m.

--Magic Mountain and Tourney tourney: see tournament.  Road from 7:10 to 7:30 a.m.

--Sunny Creek Drive at Decoro Drive from 7:35 to 9 a.m.

--Delays on Avenue Scott, Avenue Hopkins and Baywood Lane from 7:45 to 10 a.m.

--Minor delays on Via Heraldo and Avenida Velarte from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

--Delays on Orchard orchard, generally an area on which fruit or nut trees are planted and cultivated. The words grove and plantation are often used when the fruits are tropical, e.g., a "citrus grove" or a "banana plantation.  Village Road between Mill Valley road and Wiley Canyon Road from 8:55 a.m. to 1 p.m.

--Also, motorists heading to the Valencia Town Center must use Valencia Boulevard.

Sunday's events are a full marathon race marathon race, long-distance foot race deriving its name from Marathon, Greece. According to legend, in 490 B.C., Pheidippides, a runner from Marathon, carried news of victory over the Persians to Athens. , a half-marathon, a 5K run/walk and a Kid K run. All races begin at 7 a.m., except the Kid K, which starts at 8:30 a.m.
