Overall, violent crime dropped 3.2 percent in Santa Clarita in 2002 from the previous year, according to the FBI, which compiled crime data from 235 cities with a population of at least 100,000 each.

``When the number of crimes goes down while our population continues to grow, that's something to be very proud of,'' said Santa Clarita City Manager Ken Pulskamp. ``We aren't resting on our laurels, though. We're investing in youth and doing everything we can to remain one of the safest cities in the nation.''

Twenty-one of every 1,000 Santa Clarita residents were victims of some type of crime in 2002, bumping the city's per capita [Latin, By the heads or polls.] A term used in the Descent and Distribution of the estate of one who dies without a will. In addition, the number of robberies in Santa Clarita rose 13.9 percent. Just one more rape was reported in 2002 than in 2001, according to the FBI report.

There were significant decreases in most property crimes, with arsons dropping by about 34 percent and burglaries by 7.7 percent.

Santa Clarita, which contracts with the Sheriff's Department for police protection, has been in the top 10 of the safest city rankings for much of the past decade, officials said.

``Santa Clarita's consistently high rankings really says so much about the community, and not just the deputies,'' said sheriff's Capt. Patti Minutello. ``The community is active, and that plays a big role in keeping the city safe.''
