CITY SECTION TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS: ECR SWEEPS TO ANOTHER CITY TITLE.

Byline: Chris Cocoles Staff Writer

Doubles players carried their team to a City Section boys' tennis championship. Just not the guys expected to make a difference.

El Camino Real El Camino Real (Spanish for The Royal Road or The King's Highway) was the name of a series of pre-automobile highways linking the various New World colonies of Spain:

High, not Granada Hills, parlayed strong doubles play into a convincing 24 1/2-5 rout Thursday afternoon at Balboa Balboa, town (1990 pop. 2,751), Colón prov., in the former Panama Canal Zone, on the Gulf of Panama. The port for Panama City, Balboa was the administrative headquarters of the Panama Canal Zone. It was also the site of a U.S. navy base (closed 1999).  Sports Complex.

of Woodland Hills' second consecutive City title wasn't shocking. The top-seeded Conquistadores (17-0) beat the No. 2 Highlanders (14-3) twice in their regular-season West Valley League meetings.

But Granada Hills won five of six doubles matches in those league contests and depended on controlling that facet of the round-robin match Thursday. Instead, ECR went 7-2 in the doubles draw to complement the Conquistadores' anticipated singles dominance (10-2).

``I can't tell you how much our doubles teams stepped up today,'' said senior No. 1 singles player Matt Jones, who lost four total games in sweeping his four matches. ``They set their goals high and they just achieved them.''

The Highlanders' three doubles teams lost just one match or set among them in regular and postseason City Section play. In a pivotal No. 1 doubles matchup, unbeaten Highlanders Brad Steinberg and Anand Murthy held a 6-1 tiebreak tie·break

lead against Nick Kogan and Shaun Flynn. ECR staved off the five set points to draw even at 6-6.

``I was standing there saying '6-1.' We couldn't do anything about it. And then we started winning points,'' said Flynn, who along with Kogan eventually reached set point at 9-8. ``Nick served and they hit it into the net. I was ecstatic.''
