CITY SECTION SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS: TITLE WORTH THE WAIT FOR CLEVELAND CAVALIERS OVERCOME BIG DEFICIT TO WIN FIRST CITY CHAMPIONSHIP.

Byline: ERIK BOAL Special to the Daily News

LOS ANGELES Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  -- Michael Chiu didn't know if his come-from-behind effort on the anchor leg of the 400-yard freestyle The code name for the MCE version of Windows. Cavaliers coach Teresa Frias didn't know if her celebratory dip in the pool "Dip in the Pool" is a short story by Roald Dahl that appeared in the 1953 collection Someone Like You. Plot Summary

And Palisades Palisades, cliffs along the west bank of the Hudson River, NE N.J. and SE N.Y., extending from N of Jersey City, N.J., to the vicinity of Piermont, N.Y., with a general altitude of from 350 ft to 550 ft (107–168 m).  of Pacific Palisades coach Maggie Nance expected to have two championship plaques plaques,

, but somehow left the AAF/John C. Argue Swim Stadium with only one.

Chiu passed Palisades' Brian Johnson in the final 50 yards of the last relay Wednesday to help Cleveland win the event in 3 minutes, 26.18 seconds.

But after waiting 35 years to win their first championship, the Cavaliers had to endure another agonizing 20-minute delay in order to confirm the final outcome.

By the time Frias saw the final score -- Cleveland 266, Palisades 263 -- she had already dried off. But that didn't make the official celebration any less sweet.

``I always dream big,'' said Frias, whose team overcame a projected 72-point deficit following the May 17 prelims.

``I told them, `No one's been paying attention Noun 1. paying attention - paying particular notice (as to children or helpless people); "his attentiveness to her wishes"; "he spends without heed to the consequences"

On a day when Granada Hills' Chris Baier (200 and 500 freestyles) and Van Nuys' Claudia Ochotorena (100 backstroke, 100 butterfly butterfly, any of a large group of insects found throughout most of the world; with the moths, they comprise the order Lepidoptera. , it was Chiu who stole the show.

The junior held off Johnson in the 200 IM and the 100 backstroke in two of the meet's best races, then overcame a half- body length deficit in the 400 free relay to help the Cavaliers rally from three points down to snap Palisades' run of titles at four in a row.

``I just gave it my all,'' said Chiu, who rallied in the final 50of the 200 IM to win a lifetime-best 2:01.65 before winning the backstroke (54.32).

``When I came off the final turn, I was thinking `I could possibly catch (Johnson)' and I just kicked like (mad).''

In addition to its 21 diving points from Alex Dashiell and Adam Greschner, Cleveland also benefited from a disqualification dis·qual·i·fi·ca·tion

to Palisades' Peter Fishler in the 100 butterfly, allowing Ashkaun Hami to win the race (54.35). The Cavaliers also received 12 critical points in the breaststroke from Fred Aquino, Edan Vhadat and Alika Bautista.

Baier clocked a personal-best 1:43.27 to win the 200 free then posted a 14-second victory in the 500 (4:44.35).

``(The 200) felt wonderful,'' said Baier, who dropped more than two seconds off his winning 200 free time from last year. ``It was good competition and (Fishler) scared me a little, so I guess that's good.''

Ochotorena, who has been battling a cold in recent weeks, remained perfect in championship competition by clocking 1:00.03 in the butterfly and 1:00.46 in the backstroke.

Brown repeated in the breaststroke (1:09.2) and lowered her best time in the IM by three seconds to win in 2:16.05.

Cleveland's Chungah Rhee defended her title in the 500 free (5:29.21) and Granada Hills' Lindsay Elam won the 200 free (2:00.4), as the teams finished second and third behind Palisades.
