SOUTH GATE - After five years of disappointment, the El Camino Real El Camino Real (Spanish for The Royal Road or The King's Highway) was the name of a series of pre-automobile highways linking the various New World colonies of Spain:

The Conquistadores got over the semifinal hump by defeating Carson 4-1 Thursday afternoon to advance to the City Section championship game June 1 at UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles

San Pedro, a 3-0 winner over Banning in Thursday's other semifinal, in the championship game. El Camino Real (27-6) and San Pedro (29-2) have each won 12 City titles. This year's game will break the tie.

``Finally,'' El Camino Real junior catcher Francesca Enea said. ``The first thing I'm going to do is call my sister when we get on the bus and tell her we won. I called her on the bus ride down and she was like, 'If you guys lose, that'll be six in a row in the semis.' I didn't even want to think about that. That wasn't going to happen.''

Enea's older sister Christina, now an All-American first baseman at Oklahoma, played in three City championship games, winning the title in 1999. The Conquistadores had lost in the semifinals to either Carson or San Pedro in the semifinals every year since.

After such a long drought, El Camino Real didn't want to wait until the late innings to pull ahead. Sophomore leadoff batter Brittany Goodchild began the game with a double to left-center field and scored two batters later on Sarah Bass' sacrifice fly to left.

El Camino Real added another run later in the inning when Kelly Caplan was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, forcing in Amanda Macintosh.

``I just wanted to get some relief off of (pitcher Megan Miller's) shoulders,'' Goodchild said. ``I'm a pitcher too, and I know how it feels to go nine or 10 innings without any runs.

``As soon as I hit the double, I felt like we were going to get some runs.''

Carson (23-12) mounted several rallies, but never got a big hit. The Colts loaded the bases in the second inning, but Miller got No. 9 batter Jackie Wilson For the British author, see .

 to pop out.

Carson got two runners on in the third inning, but Miller struck out Paulina Nihipali.

Carson scored its run in the fifth inning, cutting the lead in half when Christina Schallig led off with a single and scored on Ashley Ventura's single to center.

Miller (21-3) finished with a four-hitter and six strikeouts. Carson's run was unearned. It was the only run Miller has given up in four postseason victories.

Enea was 2 for 4 with a run and Kelly Oswald was 3 for 3 with a run. The City championship game was originally scheduled to be played Tuesday, but had to be moved back eight days because UCLA is hosting an NCAA NCAA
