CITY SECTION SOCCER PLAYOFFS: PATRIOTS ADVANCE IN OT.

Byline: Daily News

The top-seeded Birmingham boys' soccer team of Van Nuys showed immense heart and character in defeating Monroe of North Hills 5-3 in overtime Thursday in a City Division quarterfinal game at Birmingham.

The host Patriots, who advanced on extra-period goals by captain Jonathan Moreno and Jaime Gomez - his fourth of the game - appeared to be tight in the first half and Monroe took advantage, setting the tempo early.

The Patriots (18-4-3) looked to their experienced midfielders in the second half to generate some offense. Seniors Zael Rivas, Tony Ortega and Moreno responded, stepping up their level of play. Their crafty passes and unselfish play opened up the field for explosive forward Gomez.

Gomez, a junior, continued to display his aerial skills, scoring on another header in the 62th minute as Birmingham drew even at 2-2.

The Vikings (9-3-3) responded a minute later on Daniel Garcia's goal, which regained the lead for Monroe.

In the 79th minute, with time winding down in regulation, Tony Ortega, (two assists) sent a long ball down the middle of the field to Gomez. Gomez received the ball at the top of the penalty box, controlled it, and fired his third goal of the game. Jefferson (14-4-3) took advantage of its size and quickness to create scoring opportunities and keep Sylmar (10-10-5) off balance.

Sylmar had its chances with 11 shots on goal. The Spartans played without their two leading scorers, however, Jaime Castellano and Juan Andrade.

``They were yellow-carded in the Banning game,'' said Sylmar coach Emanuel Martins. ``But that's no excuse. Jefferson outplayed us.''

Martins praised the play of Sylmar midfielder Del Aguilar and Spartans goalie Christian Pelayo, who had six saves.
